Program Description

Course Overview

This course draws on the expertise of equine health and management specialists at Michigan State University to build essential horse care skills. Participants will learn how to recognize early signs of illness or injury, assess a horse’s health on a routine basis, and make informed decisions about preventative care. Emphasis is placed on developing the knowledge and confidence needed to respond effectively to health concerns and emergency situations, supporting the overall well-being of the horse.

Each unit consists of an overview, informative topics including pictures and short video clips, plus optional activities. It is estimated to take 5 hours to complete the course.

This self-paced online course provides participants with nine months of access to all course materials starting from the purchase date.

Certificate of Completion

Upon completion of the course, participants receive a downloadable certificate of completion. This course is not eligible for university credit.

Key Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Assess a horse’s overall health through observation and routine evaluation
  • Recognize early signs of illness, injury, and abnormal behavior
  • Apply key components of routine preventative health care
  • Maintain accurate and useful horse health records
  • Explain basic biosecurity practices to prevent disease spread
  • Respond appropriately to common health concerns and emergency situations
