Program Description

Course Overview

The Horse Selection and Evaluation course is based on the knowledge of equine experts at Michigan State University and nationally recognized equine professionals. In this course, you will discover a wealth of resources for learning about many factors that contribute to sound decisions when selecting a horse for a specific use. Horse ownership can be a rewarding experience, and selecting the right horse is the first step! 

Each unit consists of an overview, informative topics including pictures and short video clips, plus optional activities. It is estimated to take 8 to 10 hours to complete the course.  

Course Format

This self-paced online course provides participants with nine months of access to all course materials starting from the purchase date.

$75.00

Certificate of Completion

Upon completion of each course, participants receive a downloadable certificate of completion. This course is not eligible for university credit.

Key Learning Objectives

You will learn about many aspects of horse selection, including breeds, uses, identification, conformation, unsoundness and blemishes, key factors to remember when purchasing a horse, and the responsibilities of horse ownership.
 

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify common horse uses and match horses to specific disciplines
  • Recognize major horse breeds and their typical uses
  • Identify horses by color, markings, and age indicators
  • Evaluate basic conformation, soundness, and movement
  • Recognize common unsoundness and blemishes
  • Apply key factors when evaluating a horse for purchase
  • Know common costs and responsibilities of horse ownership
