Technology Requirements 

To be successful in your course, you need the right tools. Review the requirements for registering and participating in MSU’s Continuing Education and Professional Development courses. 

Hardware and Connectivity

  • Computer or mobile device (Windows, MacOS, iOS, or Android)
  • Internet Connection: 25 Mbps for live Zoom sessions 
  • Browser: Chrome or Firefox (latest version recommended)
  • Webcam and Microphone (required for live or synchronous sessions)

Register an Account

You will need an account in the registration system to register for courses, and access your online course in the Learning Management System (LMS - D2L). 

To set up your account

For new learners

  • Create an account as a New User
  • Enter your email address and retype your email address to confirm
    • This email address is upper and lower case sensitive. 
  • Click on Create Account

Next, create your profile

  • Enter your First and Last name
  • Enter your home address and phone number
  • Enter your Employer Information and Job Title (if required)
  • This information is important for specific program offerings. If you are a lifelong learner or retired, you may fill that in accordingly.
  • Next, please select your contact preferences and review the privacy policy. 
  • Click Submit

Next, please check your email from Michigan State University to set up your password. The email will come from noreply@next.msu.edu

Once you have created your password, log in to the Learner Portal or browse the course catalog to view and register for course or program offerings.

Learning Management System (LMS)

Michigan State University’s Learning Management System (LMS) is D2L Brightspace. This is the online platform used for continuing education and professional development courses. This is where you will access course materials, complete assignments, and engage with instructors if your course is offered online or includes online components.

To access your course in D2L Brightspace, you must have registered for a course through MSU’s Continuing Education registration system. Please allow up to five minutes after registering before your course link appears in the system. 

Once you have registered for your course and are logged in to the learner portal, you will go to the left menu and click on Access LMS. A new tab will open in your browser, and you will have access to the courses that you’ve registered for.
